What does “Nudelreis” mean in German — is it rice or pasta?

Nudelreis literally means “noodle-rice,” and that contradiction is the point: despite its name and its grain-like shape, it’s ordinary pasta made from durum wheat, not rice at all. Italians call the same shape orzo or risoni; Greeks call it kritharaki. In German kitchens it shows up in cold salads and soups wherever a rice-like texture is wanted without cooking actual rice.

The compound follows a common German pattern of naming food by shape rather than ingredient — much like Fadennudeln (“thread noodles,” thin vermicelli) or Katzenzungen (“cat’s tongues,” flat chocolate bars). Because Nudelreis cooks in the same 6–8 minutes as other small pasta, recipes like this Grillbeilage (barbecue side dish) swap it in for classic Nudelsalat with no change in method — only the shape looks different on the plate.
