What does “cultureel werker” mean in Dutch?

A cultureel werker is a trained community professional who works in a Dutch neighbourhood centre (buurthuis) or district office — organising activities, connecting residents to services, and helping newcomers find their footing. The title is a real MBO-level qualification in the Netherlands, and it is often the first official you meet when you arrive in a new city. It does not mean artist or arts worker.

In the clip, a visitor asks for “de cultureel werker” and Elly de Jong introduces herself as “de cultureel werkster” — the feminine form. Dutch adds -ster to make a job title specifically feminine: werker (worker, general or male) → werkster (female worker). The same pattern appears in zangeres (female singer), danseres (female dancer), though modern usage increasingly favours the gender-neutral form. You will see “sociaal-cultureel werker” in full on job listings; in casual speech the “sociaal” is often dropped.
